Move Canoes back to the beach

Not much Sailing today.  We had to retreive our canoes from up the road. We moved them there April 1, after the 8.2 earth quake in anticipation of a tsunami.

We practiced our new Oli Inoa for Na Pe'a composed by Alohikea. Went for a short swim then discussed our Ho'okena trip.

Keauhou Bay Clean up and First "Place to Place" Voyage

Keauhou to Kamakahonu

KEAUHOU BAY CLEAN UP

We arrived at Ka'ili'ilinehe at 7:00 AM and walked over to the Sheraton Hotel and met with Aunty Lili.

Aunty Lili pointed out the areas she wanted cleaned of vegitation.  Kanika'ula Heiau, the Halau Wa'a site and along the trails that led to these historic sites.  We pulled, cut and carried a bunch of plants and weeds and worked on the site for almost two hours.  And when we were done things looked really great.

We then returned to Ka'ili'ilinehe and rigged our canoe Mailelauli'i.  Everyone worked hard at learning the Kua'iako and Lanalana lashings.

The wind began to blow very hard  out of the South and the ocean went from Ow to Halu'a then to Kai Ahulu.  We were not sure if we would be able to sail.  But by the time we were done eating lunch, the wind had calmed.  The wind Shifted to the North West and Owe conditions  returned so we lauched our three canoes and set sail sail for Kamakahonu in Kailua.

Kinikini escorted us all the way.

We experienced three major wind shifts and some pretty choppy seas.  The wind came predominantly out of the North giving us the oppurtunity to practice our tacking skills.  After three hours at sea, we pulled into Kamakahonu.

WORD FOR THE DAY:  Punini

To tack, sail back and forth into the wind

By six o'clock we had unrigged our three canoes and loaded them on to our new canoe trailer.  Long day,(11 hours) but we got a lot done and had an adventurous first voyage.

OPELU NET DAYUncle Albert from Napo'opo'o explained the process of putting out an Opelu net. Big Mahalo to Uncle Albert and Uncle Keola for putting this together for us.                                 MARCH 5, 2014

After learning about the Opelu net we went sailing. No wind, and we had to do some blue water crew changes.  Our canoe handling skills are greatly improving.
